Volunteer for WCGS

Do you have an interest in genealogy?  Whatever your skill level, we could use you!  Whether you have been researching for years or are just considering starting to work on your family tree, you can help.  We are always looking for more volunteers!  You do not have to live locally to help.  Volunteers are currently needed in the following areas, with those that need to be local indicated as such:

  • Quarterly Newsletter Editor

    • We are currently seeking someone who has experience and / or the skill to take over as Editor of our quarterly newsletter, Heir Lines.​  Our planned schedule is for publishing in January, April, July, and October.  

  • Monthly Newsletter Help

    • We could use help with content, layout, and proofreading for our monthly e-News.  Our e-News is published the first Friday of every month following the Board Meeting, meaning that some months it might occasionally go out on the second Friday. 

  • WCGS Resource Library (LOCAL)

    • We are seeking help with the maintenance of our library holdings, including shelving books, labeling books, article extraction from periodicals, and maintenance of Subject and Family files.  Knowledge of and experience with LibraryThing is a plus, but not required.​

  • Indexing Records

    • WCGS works in conjunction with the Warren County Records Center & Archives in preserving and digitizing records.  These records are in need of being indexed, and in some cases, the index being updated.  Experience with computers and using spreadsheets is needed for this.​

  • Cleaning the Resource Library (LOCAL)

    • Do you like to keep things neat and tidy?  Do you love to dust, vacuum, and keep things clean?  We all help, but having someone keeping this performed on a regular schedule would be wonderful!​

  • Accounting / Bookkeeping

    • Our Treasurer is happy to help you navigate the requirements for nonprofit organizations in Ohio, whether you want to utilize these skills here or for another organization.​​

  • Scanning (LOCAL)

    • We have recently completed our Society inventory and have an entire closet of records, photos, and other things that need to be scanned.​

  • Cemetery Help (LOCAL)

    • We are seeking one or two people who would like to make the documentation and preservation of Warren County cemeteries their main focus and help with the Cemetery Restoration Workshops.  This person or persons should know or be willing to learn the Ohio laws applying to cemeteries and establish relationships with the people who are involved in the oversight and maintenance of Warren County cemeteries, both public and private​.

  • WCGS Historian (LOCAL)

    • Just think scrapbooking!  Who knew that you could help us preserve our history by doing one of America's best-loved hobbies?

  • Website Assistance

    • Our website is one of the main ways people find out about us.  We could use another person who has knowledge of how websites operate, or is willing to learn, to help with our website and social media.​  In addition, we need help with:

      • Scanning missing issues of e-News to be added to the page. (LOCAL)

      • Scanning missing issues of Heir Lines to be added to the page. (LOCAL)

Reasons to Volunteer

There are many benefits to volunteering and many good reasons to volunteer for WCGS.

​

  1. Volunteers receive complimentary membership.  As long as you are considered a Volunteer, you do not have to pay for your membership!  A definite perk.

  2. Volunteers attend any event they work for FREE.  This includes the Cemetery Restoration Workshop held each year.

  3. Volunteers get 50 free copies each month.  While paying for copies won't break the bank, it certainly helps the budget over time if you are working on your own research.

  4. Volunteers get to hang out with like-minded individuals.  The saying goes, "You have found your people."

  5. Volunteers continually learn from helping others and from other Volunteers.  It's a win-win!

  6. Volunteers are helping to save history.  Yep, that indexing / scanning / data entry you are doing is exactly that!

  7. You are all welcome to become a Volunteer!

    • All ages.​

    • All ethnicities.

    • All experience levels.

    • Etc. (You get the picture.)

  8. Our only criteria is having a good attitude.  And being a good person.  No bad guys allowed.
